I adore this program! Everything I make I use GIMP to make it, all my sigs, all my drawings and designs..It's like my right arm!
It's good for Linux, Apple Macs, and Windows 2000-up.

Notepad++
You can use normal Notepad but Notepad++ is much easier to use imo, though if you use normal Notepad you'll get more respect from hardened web-developers.
I personally want it as easy as possible. :P
