You are not guaranteed that streets are safe. Bridges easily go down, shattered streets, light poles falling plus the whole panic that an earthquake provokes (in people) makes a combination of disorder and chaos which is terrible by itself...
As I said stay in your house, in a corner between two walls... a good building SHOULD (not 100%) resist things like this

I never had an earthquake here in brisbane but we did suffer a major flood. My old house was completely destroyed and washed away. Luckily I had all my stuff with me

this applies for anti earthquakes buildings i guess man, for a house that is not builded considering this variable maybe is not that smart to stay inside the house.
